E-Connectivity Lab

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kapurthala has been provided e-connectivity under the 10th Five Year Plan by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The purpose of this facility is to enable KVKs to function as knowledge resource centres in technology. Currently the facility is being used for reporting purpose. However, another advantage of e-connectivity is sharing of information through video conferencing. Presently, the KVK hub is providing a two way audio and one way video webcasting and broadcasting which will further facilitate and strengthen communication bond between the scientists. Also this facility is being used for sending SMS on agro-advisory alerts to the farmers and other stakeholders in the district. Establishment of this facility has provided an enabling environment to KVK for developing partnerships and collaborations between scientists and farmers for sharing appropriate technologies, best practices and innovative ideas among all stakeholders. The facility has provided internet access to global e-content on agriculture. Also the KVK is now using the information like updated weather based agro-advisories posted on websites regularly for the use of farmers.

Plant health clinic

Plant health clinic has been established at KVK Kapurthala to provide farmers with basic health services and provide advice based on sound diagnosis. The laboratory was established during March, 2010. The major emphasis is on the diagnosis of various diseases of different crops as well as imparting practical training in identification of different kinds of diseases and insects. Farmers are regularly visiting the centre for diagnosis of different disease infested and insect infected plants. Till now, a total of 61 samples have been diagnosed in this lab. Various blow ups depicting the disease symptoms have been put up in the lab for the help of the farmers. The live specimens of various useful and harmful insects have been kept in the lab for identification by the farmers.

Soil-water testing lab

The soil and water laboratory was established during 2006 and analysed 2108 samples till date by charging Rs 20 per sample as testing fee. The soil health and water quality in the district is depleting due to excessive use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. Burning of paddy and wheat straw has further deteriorated the soil health. Crops yield in district are declining due to increasing deficiency of macro and micro nutrients. In order to ameliorate nutrient deficiency of major and micro nutrients, the farmers are advised to apply fertilizers on the basis of soil test. this will enhance the nutrient use efficiency as well increase margin of profit of farmers.

Vermicompost Unit

This demonstrates the conversion of farm waste into enriched compost. Two different species of worms are reared so that the culture can be made available to farmers. The annual capacity of the unit is 18 tons. 1. Eisenia foetida 2. Eudrillus uginae

Farmer’s hostel

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra has a farmer’s hostel that can accommodate 20 farmers at a time. The hostel rooms are well furnished too. The facilities are also available to outside farmers who visit us during study tours on nominal charges.

Net house

Vegetables growing can supplement the income of the farmers. PAU has already standardized technology for protected cultivation of vegetables. The university has recommended net-house cultivation of capsicum, tomato and brinjal. The technology helps to extend the growing season, improves quality of the produce and minimizes the pesticides residues. To demonstrate this technology among the farmers of Kapurthala, KVK has constructed a small shade unit at KVK premises. The produce of the net-house fetches high price in the market due to their better quality and early availability. Further the vegetables grown in the net-house contract minimum incidence of insect transmitted viruses. Vegetables like cucumber, beans and bottle gourd also give encouraging results under net-houses. Under the existing scenario of demand for better quality vegetables and continuously shrinking land holding, protected cultivation can help farmers to increase their profitability per unit area.
